Route

OK, I have to go to a Sun wedding in Johnson City the end of Oct. I was hoping to leave Friday night, ride for a few hours, camp, then ride Sat most of the day and have the wife pick me up on her way down. So I thouhgt what a chance to scout a route. I know we talked about leaving from the Dallas area this year. Any Ideas, plans, thoughts, etc?

I used the new google walk mapping from the VA in Dallas. Route doesn't seem too bad may need some tweeking.

Good initiative. Starting from the VA hospital may be a great idea.

I am hoping to stay East of 35 for most of the trip down, depending on the locations of VFW's and any other publicity stops we hope to make during the day.

Personally, I'm not all that interested in going over territory we've already covered, either, but I'll go with whatever route seems most effective to the mission.

I'd like to see if we can stick to a fairly flat route if possible. Just from the terrain view in Google maps, that seems to favor the idea to stay East of I-35. But that's from a very high level view only.

I was talking with one of the Lone Star Randonneur members the other day, and got some good input from him. He is one of the guys that plans a good deal of the routes. He put me on a few very good resources. I'll see if I can throw something together for our meeting, maybe something with local hotels, etc...

OK east of 35 sounds good, just have to make the wife drive a bit further to pick me up on her way down....

We are now definitely going to start the ride from Austin. We have just about locked in "Mellow Johnny's" as the starting location. Not sure what your plans are once you are linked up with us. I would recommend that you go with the "ride to the ride" concept raising awareness along the way then once you are with us just do the rides we do.

Have you contacted the VA to see if you can get a send off ceremony? We will probably have a few warriors want to ride with you. Specialist Sean McEndree is back with us and very excited about doing all the soldier rides. He is a strong cyclist. Nieves may want to as well as his friend SGT Robert Mathews who is also stationed at Ft. Hood.

Woody, I am so excited about the ride start in Austin. It's my former stomping grounds. Earlier this year I made the trip to check out Mellow Johhny's and what a great start spot! Do you have some route/ride plans from Austin to SA yet?

For those in DFW...if you (we) are going to start from the VA, I have local Kerrville VA contacts who might at least get us directed to the right people to ask for send off extravaganza help.

Woody, Carolinas Challenge is just around the corner, how's it shaping up? I gave my brothers contact info to see if he could get you all on base, any luck?

take care all...peace....Lari
